Greenhouse Programme

General Information

​

Greenhouse Programme was established in 2019 within the Department of Herb and Animal Production within the Vocational School of Technical Sciences of Igdir University.

Students who come to the Horticulture Programme, whose medium of instruction is Turkish, are required to take 120 ECTS courses in accordance with Bologna criteria.  Therefore, in case of graduation, a student must be successful in at least 120 ECTS courses and achieve a GPA of at least 2.0 out of 4.0. In addition, it is necessary to be successful in all compulsory courses (including internship) in the course curriculum.

Students who graduate from the Greenhouse programme can operate in the following areas with their knowledge and experience:

  1. Modern Greenhouse Enterprises:
  • Production planning and management in commercial greenhouses.
  • Managing greenhouse air conditioning and irrigation systems for efficient production
  • Vegetable, fruit and ornamental plants cultivation.
  • Organic and Ecological Agriculture:
    • Applying organic farming methods and providing counselling.
    • Developing sustainable production techniques by protecting natural resources.
  • Agricultural Consultancy and Training:
    • Providing training and guidance to farmers on modern greenhouse practices.
    • Contributing to local agricultural policies.
  • Agricultural Research and Development (AR-GE):
    • To make studies on new greenhouse technologies and plant species.
    • Developing projects to increase the yield of greenhouse plants.
  • Landscape and Ornamental Plants Production:
    • Ornamental plants cultivation and taking part in landscape projects.
    • Production and sale of plants of aesthetic value.
  • Agricultural Technologies and Mechanisation:
    • Using and introducing modern greenhouse equipment and technologies.
    • Specialisation in air conditioning, automation and smart agriculture applications.
  • ​Entrepreneurship and Establishing Own Business:
    • Direct contribution to agricultural production by establishing their own greenhouses.
    • Cultivation of products for local and international markets.
  • Public and Private Sector:
    • Working in the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, municipalities and other public institutions.
    • Working in private companies operating in the agricultural sector.

    Double Major/ Minor Programmes

    Double Major: It gives students the opportunity to pursue a bachelor's degree in another subject of interest in addition to their major. In this programme, students can have a diploma in both fields by completing the courses of two different departments.

    Minor Programmes: It allows the student to take a certain number of courses in a field of interest other than his/her major. Students who complete the minor programme are awarded an official certificate in this field; however, this does not mean a second undergraduate diploma.




    Exchange Programmes

    It offers students the opportunity to study at another university in Turkey or abroad for a certain period of time. Due to these programmes, students have the opportunity to get to know different cultures, improve their foreign language skills and gain international academic experience. The most common exchange programmes include Erasmus+, Mevlana and Farabi.

    Career

    Aim of the Department: To promote sustainable agriculture and animal husbandry practices by providing knowledge and skills in plant and animal production techniques.

    Objectives: To make quality production by using modern technologies, to work with environmentally friendly methods and to increase productivity in agricultural production.

    Current Status and Future of the Department / Programme: Our department continues its activities with one faculty member and one lecturer.

    Career Opportunities: Graduates can work in agricultural consultancy, private farms, government agencies, food production facilities and more.
